SW London GLA Candidate Hustings

Across SW London, the development of buildings, spaces and entire neighbourhoods is happening without the input of local communities, and often ignores the local knowledge, needs and wishes of people who live in them. The Mayor in particular has powers to carry out planning functions and make decisions with very little oversight, and we are seeing that the resulting development neither addresses the challenges nor results in the integrated and sustainable communities that London needs. The GLA’s role in giving local communities a meaningful role is key to changing this.

The SW London GLA Candidate Hustings is an opportunity to question candidates on whether they value local communities being part of the planning of their neighbourhoods: how will they act to increase participation and create the kind of inclusive development London desperately needs?

The four SW London candidates are invited to this event:

· Andree Frieze (Green)

· Candice Atterton (Labour)

· Gareth Roberts (Liberal Democrat)

· Nichols Rogers (Conservative)

Format:

1. Candidates make short opening statements

2. Several community groups from across SW London briefly present the challenges they face, which though experienced locally are typical across the constituency. (Groups and issues to be confirmed)

3. The candidates respond.

4. Further questions, gathered in advance or taken from live chat from the audience.

The event is organized by Listen to Locals, a pan-London campaign bringing together community organisations who want to be included in the planning decisions that impact their communities’ futures
